Easy Peasy Almond Squeezy

As a part of our mission to reduce waste at home, we've opted into making our own Almond Milk, and "holy cow" is it ever easy.

Since the introduction of our handmade Bumble Bags (reusable mesh produce bags) we have been trying to make the most of our reusable alternative to plastic wrap! And well, we just can not make Almond Milk with plastic wrap, can you?!

Our Recipe:

1 c. Raw Almonds (the giant bag from Costco is a great value and seems to last forever)
1 1/2 c. Cold tap water
900ml Filtered Water

The Steps (filtering process takes less than 10 minutes):

1. Add your almonds and cold tap water to a mason jar.
2. Cover the jar with a lid or Beeswax Food Wrap.
3. Refrigerate for 6 hours or overnight (any longer than this and your almonds will give you a very, nutty flavour).

4. After your desired soaking time has elapsed, drain almonds and rinse.
5. Add almonds to blender + 800 filtered water (we use a Blendtec at home, it's a great high-power and high-speed blender).
6. Once blended, stretch a Bumble Bag (reusable mesh produce bag) overtop of a large bowl and pour in blended mixture).
7. Use the force of your hands to squeeze out as much liquid as possible.
8. Pour liquid into a 1L jar and your Almond Milk is ready for consumption! (while discarding the almond pulp, or using it for your next recipe!)


Reasons that we hope to convince you to make your own Almond Milk:

1. Milk is heavy! Don't worry about lugging it around the grocery store (I'm not a cart person).

2. Without the added preservatives...I can pronounce "water, almonds, and...more water"

3. It takes 6 hours, or overnight. Prep time is 30 seconds.

4. It's less expensive in the long run than purchasing individual cartons of milk.

5. The food waste produced from making Almond Milk is 100% biodegradable. It's as close to zero waste as we can get! (and cartons of milk and sometimes not fully recyclable depending on your municipalities recycling depo).
